The Dental Practice Heroes Podcast

May 4, 2020

Today we are talking with Dr. Chad Johnson.  He is Owner of Veranda Dentistry and the host of The Everyday Practices Podcast.

Some Talking Points

(2:30) – Chad’s History and explanation of how he bought his second and third practice.

(5:00) - Chad discusses different practice models and his experience.

(13:08) – Dr. Chad shares the big insurance move he did just recently during this COVID -19 Crisis.

Here is his letter to patients:

Dear Patients, Family, and Friends,

This summer, I am celebrating providing 15 years of dentistry in the community, and 32 years of being part of this area. The current viral pandemic has hurt our community and all of our pocketbooks, and it will continue to do so for quite a while to come.

In order to help your family and our community as a whole, we are lowering our prices immediately and across all procedural codes, by 25%. This means that coming to our office will be more affordable than ever.

We have changed our relationship with insurance so you can get even better care, especially amidst and after this COVID pandemic state crisis. You will be getting a letter from your insurance company that implies that you will need to find another dentist, in order to save cost. You have the right to remain with us. Because we have reduced our fees, switching to another office will not necessarily save you money. In general, insurance companies are taking advantage of this crisis, and I will not allow it with my patients, so I am directing the cost savings directly to you.

Lastly, if you are laid off, or find that your dental insurance premiums increase over the next year, please consider our in-house alternative to insurance, called our Veranda Inclusive Plan (VIP), which is more affordable than dental insurance for individuals and families alike:  https://www.verandadentistry.com/new-patients/vip-plan/

(16:00) – Chad explains how he used this as PR opportunity

(16:36) – How paying down debt makes you more resilient.

(24:00) – Chad discussed patient loyalty vs. in network status.

(25:45) – Chad explains that process of going FFS.

Little System Segment Chad’s google calendar.  He explains how he uses his google calendar to schedule his week. He gives a glimpse into his time management and how he leads and manages the practice.  He then discusses his meeting schedule with his team and the importance.

Get Real Segment – Dr. Chad’s biggest struggle at this practice is staffing 3 offices.  His solution is delegation to his team.  He wishes he could have told himself to take a ton of CE and make sure you implement it. In 2011, Chad has lightning strike his office and fry his server.  He only had local backup.  He explains the importance of having online backup.
